Mark 12:24 Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?
These Sadducees didn’t know the scriptures that they said they knew. They didn’t know the God that they said they knew. They had relationship problems. Oh, not with the Pharisees, the Scribes or the Herodians … they all seemed to get along great… well, at least when it came to accusing Jesus.
Here the Lord stood before them and they didn’t know Him. The Sadducees rejected all scripture except for the Torah – the first five books of the Bible. They chose only the scriptures they wanted to believe. Even so, if they had been open to what the Torah truly had to say instead of interpreting scripture based on their opinions they would have been able to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Genesis chapter 22 is a remarkable chapter in that it very plainly reveals the gospel plan of God providing Himself a lamb for an offering. Add onto that all the pictures and types we have in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus … had they known the scriptures they would have recognized that Jesus was the Messiah.
Know the scriptures and know the power, the plans and the purposes of God. You don’t have to go through life wondering what God has in store for you and for all His creation. You can read it and expect it all to come true because God has a track record of being 100 % right 100 % of the time. Do you realize just how amazing the Bible is? When God says in 2 Timothy that His Word is God breathed He literally means it is from His mouth. Too many Christians go around with a neutered faith because they will not take the time to study their Bibles. Strive to know God on an intimate level.
If you wanted to know a friend on a more intimate level, what would you do? You might engage in conversation with them. You might hang out with them – try to spend more time with them. You might go over to their house. But what if you wanted to know their deepest thoughts … their desires … or even what they think about you? Well, then you might read their journal. Do you get where I’m going with this? Let me put it plainly … God says His thoughts about you are innumerable (Psalm 139:18) … you can find out what He’s thinking about you in His journal … the Bible. Christians have no excuse for ignorance when it comes to God.
