Today we continue our study in 1 Corinthians with the first part of chapter 3. Our chapter will talk about spiritual infancy and maturity, carnality, and the sure foundation of Jesus Christ. The goal of our study this morning is to discover what it is that Paul says has resulted in carnality in the church and what that means to us as a body and individually.

In our study, we move from the introductions and greetings to the body of the letter. It is here that Paul is going to start really addressing those things that are bringing division in that church in Corinth. Many of those problems Paul addresses remain problems in the church of today. As we continue our study and look at many different principles, keep in mind the bottom line. The bottom line is that keeping the gospel central is absolutely important to Christian unity. We’ll recognize that trying to live the Christian life by your own smarts gets us into trouble, and has resulted in many of those things counter to scripture that can be found in the church. We’ll speak about Eisogesis and Exegesis and narcissism and what Paul means by the “foolishness” of the message.

Today we begin our study in 1 Corinthians, a letter in which Paul confronts a young church with many problems. The Corinthian church had class problems, arguments over style, infighting lawsuits, and unconfronted immorality. The church at Corinth was full of problems, and its into this situation that the Apostle Paul wrote this letter. But, if we are to be honest, the church in Corinth doesn’t sound too far off from what we see going on in many churches today. But it’s not just the corporate church … worldliness finds it’s way into individual Christians, too. And so, this letter has direct application for today’s Christian in today’s world and for today’s church.
