Hebrews 7b

Shawn Bumpers / General

Introduction

Psalm 110 to reveal that Jesus’ priesthood was according to the “Order of Melchizedek.”

Psalm 110:4 NKJV

The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 5:10 NKJV

called by God as High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek,”

The priests of Israel were the Levites.

Hebrews 5:3 NKJV

Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins.

Okay, so then did all priesthood under God die out?

Melki-Zedek or “My King is Righteous”

Jesus Christ was of the tribe of Judah.

John 1:1 NKJV

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Hebrews 1:2 NKJV

has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

v4-10

θεωρέω theōreō.

Abraham is greater than Levi and Melchizedek is greater than Abraham.

The word “tithe” means “one tenth.”

Under the Jewish Law, the Jews were commanded to give God one tenth of their crops, herds, and flocks.

Leviticus 27:30–32 NKJV

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s. It is holy to the Lord. If a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it. And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord.

John 8:58 NKJV

Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

v11-14

A step further.

Melchizedek greater than Aaron … he has replaced Aaron.

τελείωσις teleiōsis: completion, fulfillment

Hebrews 7:19 NKJV

for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

There was no means in that system for a perfect standing before God.

The High Priest could not do that nor could animal sacrifices.

Hebrews 10:1–2 NIV84

The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

προστίθημι prostithēmi added; put to

Galatians 3:19 NKJV

What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.

Galatians 3:24–25 NKJV

Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

The Law of Moses made no provision for a priesthood from the tribe of Judah.

Colossians 2:14 NKJV

having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

Galatians 5:1 NKJV

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Romans 7:4 NKJV

Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Ephesians 6:6 NKJV

not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,

v15-19

Being imperfect, the priesthood and the Law could not continue forever.

1 Corinthians 13:10 NKJV

But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

Malachi 3:6 NKJV

“For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.

His priesthood does not change.

v20-22

It is guaranteed with a divine oath.

ἔγγυος engyos: security; guarantee

1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV

For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

Galatians 3:22 NKJV

But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

“Better” and “Forever.”

“Covenant.”

διαθήκη diathēkē

v23-25

Levitical priesthood was occupied by men – always interrupted by death.

Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

ἀπαράβατος aparabatos: incorruptible and permanent

Hebrews 7:25 NKJV

Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Christ’s priesthood lasts forever.

His priestly ministry brings complete salvation.

v26-28

Emphasis is on His sinlessness.

1 Samuel 2:12 NKJV

Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord.

Harmless here means “blameless.”

Undefiled means “unstained.”

Jesus never had to offer sacrifices for His own cleansing, as did the priests.

Day of Atonement

1 John 2:1–2 NKJV

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

1 John 1:9 NKJV

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 10:9–10 NKJV

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:13 NKJV

For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
